Unit Description

This introduction to the world of Islam covers the essential characteristics and history of early Islam as a set of ideas: religious, social, educational, cultural and political. The unit surveys Islam from its beginnings in the Seventh century to the post-colonial upheavals of the mid-20th century. Attention will be given to: (a) creation of new Muslim States; (b) the challenge of fundamentalism; (c) disagreements with the West.
