Unit Description

This unit comprises up to 26 lecture hours and 12 tutorial hours. It is one of a suite of units in economic history. The unit provides a comprehensive overview of East Asia's economic, political and business environment. It looks at the economic and social transformation of Asia after World War II and analyses the prospects for its continuation. It investigates conditions and pathways to economic development, identifies the general issues common to the East Asian economies, assesses their management strategies, and analyses the historical and economic forces that led them to adopt market-oriented strategies. It also examines the impact of industrialisation on two global concerns: labour and labour standards, and the environment and environmental standards.
