| Unit Description |
This unit concerns circumstances and processes whereby concepts and practices characteristic of Western (Euro-American) art forms came to be embraced in Asian cultures. For each culture addressed, the historical context for emergence of hybridity in the arts will be broached, and circumstances of culture contact that have influenced the selective responses of artists and audiences considered. Through case-studies of a range of genres, students will develop insight into interaction among world-views, artistic practices and concepts of 'tradition', as a nexus within which expressive modes from Western literary, visual and performing arts have been drawn upon in shaping hybrid arts in Asia. |
