1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree shall:

(a) have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to a Bachelor degree in the University; or

(b) have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to a degree or other qualification acceptable to the school as sufficient qualification for candidature; or

(c) have satisfied the school by means of qualifications and/or experience, that adequate preparation for candidature has been made.

1.2. (a) A candidate who has been recommended by the school for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology may be permitted to transfer to candidature for the degree of Master of Information Systems.

(b) A candidate for the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology who has completed units counting 24 credit points and who has a satisfactory academic record may be permitted to transfer to candidature for the degree of Master of Information Systems.

1.3. Admission to candidature and the date of commencement of the candidature shall be determined by the school on the recommendation of the Postgraduate Course Coordinator of Computer Science.

2. Course Requirements for the Degree of Master of Information Systems
The course of study shall comprise the completion of unit with a total value of at least 72 credit points with at least 48 credit points being at 400-level or above and including: COMP100, 131, 160, 503, 513, 588, 589, 592, 586, 593, GSB741; plus one units to be chosen from AMTH140; COMP170, 480, 482, 483, 485, 587, 490, 507, 508, 511, 515, 518, 519, 520, 521, 522, 523, 591; or other units approved by the Course Coordinator.

3. Advanced Standing
On the recommendation of the postgraduate course coordinator, a student may be granted advanced standing to a maximum of 24 credit points towards the Master in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 provided that:

(a) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 for an awarded Graduate Certificate or a Graduate Diploma in a relevant area offered by the University shall be for units counting 24 credit points; or

(b) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Rules Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 for an awarded Bachelor degree in a relevant area shall be for units counting 24 credit points; or

(c) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 shall be for units counting 24 credit points; or

(d) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 shall be for units counting 12 credit points; or

(e) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 shall be for units counting six credit points.

4. Period of Candidature
4.1. The requirements of the degree shall be completed in not less than 18 months and not more than two years of full-time study nor more than five years of part-time study.

4.2. Where the prescribed course of study has been reduced in terms of Rule 1.2., the period of candidature may be reduced accordingly.

4.3. In exceptional circumstances and on the basis of written evidence the school may extend the periods of candidature specified in Rule 4.1.
