Why study the Master of Information Technology at UNE?

The Master of Information Technology is a course work only degree designed for students who do not have a computing background and who are seeking to achieve qualifications in information technology.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the degree who complete the Software Engineering option will have skills in design and development of software systems.

Those who complete the Internet and Web Technologies option will graduate with the technological skills necessary for employment in the internet and world wide web areas.

The Computer Networks program will provide graduates with the skills required for consulting and managment positions computer networking.

Articulation from the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology:

On completion of the Graduate Diploma, students are able to articulate to the Master of Information Technology with 24 credit points advanced standing for units completed towards the Graduate Diploma.

Entry Requirements

An applicant must hold a three-year Bachelor degree. Prior knowledge of computer science and mathematics is not required.

Applicants with other qualifications and relevant experience may also be considered.

Advanced Standing Advanced standing may be granted for a maximum of 24 credit points on the basis previous study completed at a recognised tertiary institution. This can include 6 credit points of advanced standing which may be granted on the basis of relevant professional experience.

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Master of Information Technology in 2008.

1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree shall:
(a) have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to a Bachelor degree in the University; or

(b) have fulfilled all of the requirements for admission to a degree or other qualification acceptable to the school as sufficient qualification for candidature; or

(c) have satisfied the school by means of qualifications and/or experience, that adequate preparation for candidature has been made.

1.2. (a) A candidate who has been recommended by the school for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology may be permitted to transfer to candidature for the degree of Master of Information Technology.

(b) A candidate for the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology who has completed units counting 24 credit points and who has a satisfactory academic record may be permitted to transfer to candidature for the degree of Master of Information Technology.

1.3. Admission to candidature and the date of commencement of the candidature shall be determined by the school on the recommendation of the Postgraduate Course Coordinator of Computer Science.

2. Course Requirements for the Degree of Master of Information Technology
2.1. A candidate for the degree shall complete one of the prescribed course work programs listed in Rule 2.4.

2.2. The course of study shall comprise units with a total value of 72 credit points with at least 48 credit points at 400-level or above.

2.3. Units Offered
AMTH140; COMP100 160, 170, 503, 504, 507, 508, 509, 511, 513, 515, 518, 519, 520, 521, 522, 523, 530, 580, 582, 583, 584, 585, 586, 587, 588, 589, 590, 591, 592, 593.

2.4. Course Work Programs
(a) Software Engineering
AMTH140; COMP160, 170, 580, 582, 584, 586, 530, 588, 593; plus two units to be chosen from units in Rule 2.3 and approved by the course coordinator.

(b) Internet and Web Technologies
AMTH140; COMP 160, 515, 530, 580, 582, 585, 588, 590, 591; plus two units to be chosen from Rule 2.3 and approved by the course coordinator.

(c) Computer Networks
AMTH140; COMP100, 160, 521, 522, 530, 580, 588, 590; plus three units to be chosen from Rule 2.3 and approved by the course coordinator

3. Advanced Standing
On the recommendation of the postgraduate course coordinator, a student may be granted advanced standing to a maximum of 24 credit points towards the Master in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 provided that:

(a) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 for an awarded Graduate Certificate or a Graduate Diploma in a relevant area offered by the University shall be for units counting 24 credit points; or

(b) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Rules Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 for an awarded Bachelor degree in a relevant area shall be for units counting 24 credit points; or

(c) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 shall be for units counting 24 credit points; or

(d) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 shall be for units counting 12 credit points; or

(e) the maximum advanced standing which may be granted in terms of Advanced Standing Rule 2.3 shall be for units counting six credit points.

4. Period of Candidature
4.1. The requirements of the degree shall be completed in not less than 18 months and not more than two years of full-time study nor more than five years of part-time study.

4.2. Where the prescribed course of study has been reduced in terms of Rule 1.2., the period of candidature may be reduced accordingly.

4.3. In exceptional circumstances and on the basis of written evidence the school may extend the periods of candidature specified in Rule 4.1.
