1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. The course is available on a Commonwealth supported basis only.
1.2. Applicants for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Economic Studies shall:
(a) have fulfilled the requirements for admission to a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at this or another university or tertiary institution, provided that the degree or qualification:
(i) is accepted by the Head of the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy or nominee as sufficient qualification for admission to the proposed course of study; and
(ii) required a minimum of three years’ full-time study; or
(b) be accepted by the Head of the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy or nominee as satisfying the requirements of the Qualifying Course for Admission to Candidature for the Degree of Master.

2. Approval of Course of Study
After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have a course of study approved by the course coordinator.

3. Requirements for the Master of Economic Studies Degree
3.1. Except as provided in Rule 5., a candidate shall:
(a) follow a course of study prescribed by the course coordinator as set out in Rule 3.2.;
(b) complete such written assignments and tasks as are prescribed and pass any examination as is prescribed in each unit of the course of study.
3.2. A candidate may proceed to the Master of Economic Studies by course work to a minimum value of 48 credit points.
Except with the permission of the course coordinator the course of study shall comprise:
(a) units to a minimum value of 36 credit points in the relevant major discipline as defined in Rule 4.; and
(b) elective units approved by the course coordinator to a minimum value of 12 credit points from the School of Business, Economics and Public Policy; and
(c) a maximum of 18 credit points at 300 level and combination of units at 400 and/or 500 level.
3.3. Except as provided in Rule 3.4., a candidate shall:
(a) as a full-time candidate, satisfy the above requirements of Rule 3.2. in not more than 18 months from the date of commencement of candidature;
(b) as a part-time candidate, satisfy the above requirements of Rule 3.2. in not less than 18 months from the date of commencement of candidature and not more than four years.
3.4. In exceptional circumstances, the course coordinator may vary the requirements of Rule 3.3. by extending the period of candidature for a period or periods totalling not more than 12 months.

4. Majors for the Master of Economic Studies Degree
4.1. Except with the permission of the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator the course of study shall include six units or 36 credit points in the relevant major discipline defined as follows:
(a) Agricultural and Resource Economics—any combination of ECON units with second digit 2 or 3 according to the specifications of Rule 3.2.
(b) Economics—any combination of ECON and QM units according to the specifications of Rule 3.
(c) Economic Analysis—compulsory units ECON 371, 408 and 409, plus other units selected from ECON 328/428 and ECON units with second digit 0, 1, 6 or 7, and QM units according to the specifications of Rule 3.2.
(d) Economic Development—ECON 314/414, 317/417, plus other units from ECON 326, 329/429, 330, 335/435, 345, 350, 377/477, 537, 556 according to the specifications of Rule 3.2.
(e) Economic History—any combination of ECON units with second digit 4 or 5 and ECON 314/414 and 316 according to the specifications of Rule 3.2.
(f) Efficiency and Productivity Analysis—ECON 377/477 plus other units from ECON 301, 326, 328/428, 334/434, 374/474, 376/476; QM 365 according to the specifications of Rule 3.2.
4.2. A candidate who successfully completes a major as listed in Rule 4.1. shall be entitled to have that major recorded on the academic transcript and testamur.

5. Advanced Standing
5.1. At the discretion of the school on the recommendation of the course coordinator,, a candidate may be granted advanced standing for course work units only, passed prior to admission to candidature, provided that such units have reasonable correspondence with units offered by the school for the Master of Economic Studies for up to 24 credit points, except as provided by Advanced Standing Rule 3 Rule 3.4.(d), on the basis of units that have been successfully completed towards a postgraduate qualification at this or another University; or through other significant learning which the school considers equivalent to units prescribed for the Master of Economic Studies.
5.2. A candidate who is re-admitted to candidature following exclusion may be granted advanced standing by the school for units in which he or she previously satisfied examiners in terms of Rule 3.1.(b).

6. Improper Conduct
Candidates are referred to the University Policy on Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct.
