Master of Arts

1. Admission to Candidature
1.1. Admission to candidature shall be determined by the course coordinator.
1.2. An applicant for admission to candidature shall have fulfilled all requirements for a degree of Bachelor of the University or shall have fulfilled the requirements for a degree or qualification of equivalent standing at another University or institution recognised by the course coordinator for this purpose.

2. Course Requirements
2.1. To qualify for the award of Master of Arts a candidate shall pass units to the value of 48 credit points at 400 level approved by the course coordinator.
2.2. Candidates must include units to the value of at least 24 credit points in the same subject or approved course of study. With the approval of the relevant head of school, WORK 500 may substitute for one of the 400 level units of a subject.
2.3. Candidates may include units to the value of not more than 12 credit points selected from individual reading unit/dissertation units within their program.

3. Subjects
3.1. (a) Candidates shall pursue a course of study approved by the course coordinator including units selected from the following subjects:

Ancient History Geography Peace Studies
Archaeology German Philosophy
Asian Studies Heritage Studies Political and International Studies
Chinese History Public Policy
Communication Studies Indonesian Regional Change Management
Defence Studies Islamic Studies Sociology
Early Christianity Italian Studies in Religion
English Japanese Women’s and Gender Studies
European Cultures Linguistics Writing
French    

and such other areas of study as approved by the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee as listed in Master of Arts Areas of Study

(b) Units in the following groups are deemed to be the subject shown for the purposes of Rule 3.1.(a):
1. Units defined as Defence Studies include: ANCH 451; HIST 429, HIST 452, HIST 453, HIST 495;
2. Units defined as Criminology and Social Justice include: APPS 495, 496; CRIM 464; PAIS 411; SOCY 410, 441, 444, 454, 482, 490. All units listed have a credit point value of six except SOCY 410 with a credit point value of 12.
3. Units defined as Women’s and Gender Studies include: ENGL 475; HIST 485; PAIS 463, PDPS 429;
4. Units defined as Ancient History include HIST 495 and, subject to relevant research topics as approved by the Head of School of Humanities, HIST 497 and 498.

3.2. With the approval of the course coordinator candidates may include any other 400-level units to the value of no more than 18 credit points.

4. Period of Candidature
4.1. (a) The expected period of candidature for full-time candidates to complete requirements is two semesters.
(b) Part-time candidates shall complete requirements in not more than eight semesters.
4.2. Where a candidate has been granted advanced standing, towards the degree, the course coordinator may reduce proportionately the period of candidature.

5. Advanced Standing
5.1. At the discretion of the course coordinator, a candidate may be granted advanced standing towards the degree.
5.2. A candidate may be granted advanced standing to a maximum of 24 credit points on the basis of units passed at this or another institution provided they have reasonable correspondence to units of course work available towards the degree.
5.3. Applications for advanced standing may be considered on the basis of professional experience under Advanced Standing Rule 1.3.

6. Award of Master of Arts
Graduating students in the Master of Arts who have successfully completed at least 36 credit points in one subject as defined in Rule 3.1. of the Master of Arts may request that the one subject or an approved course of study as determined by the relevant school Teaching and Learning Committee appear on their testamur.

Master of Arts Areas of Study
Early Christianity
HIST 481, HIST 484, HIST 487, HIST 488, HIST 496;
plus three other 400 level units of the student's choice.

Heritage Studies
Core Units: ARPA 452 , HIST 456; plus
12 credit point dissertation, either: ARPA 480 or HIST 498; and
two units from: ARPA 456, EM 532, GEPL 438, GEPL 444, GEPL 402, GEPL 470, HIST 438, HIST 454, HIST 495.

Public Policy
At least 36 credit points from:
PAIS 411, 418, SOCY 444, CRIM 464; including no more than 12 credit points from: GEPL 445, PAIS 452, PAIS 461.

Regional Change Management
36 cp (six units) including: GEPL 430, 445, 454; three units from the following: PDAS 415, ARPA 452; GEPL 404, 450, 470; HIST 454, 456; PAIS 416, 417, 418; SOCY 411, SOCY 431.

Studies in Religion
At least 36 cp from HIST 483, HIST 484, HIST 485, HIST 486, HIST 487, HIST 488, HIST 496, HIST 497, HIST 498.

Writing
At least 12 credit points from: COMM 423, ENCO 406, ENCO 429, ECT 403, ENGL 404, plus at least six credit points and not more than 24 credit points from COMM 486, ECTW 402, ENCO 408, ENCO 426, ENCO 428, ENGL 472, WORK 500 (if field approved by head of school).

Peace Studies
Units defined as Peace Studies: 36 cp including: PDPS 401, 402, 451, 454, 473, 429.
