Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science

Why study the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science at UNE?

The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science is the first award level of a fully articulated program which gives qualified applicants the opportunity for study at three progressive levels: Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science, Graduate Diploma in Geographic Information Science; Master of Geographic Information Science.

The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science is designed to provide basic academic and professional training in the use and application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing for graduates who wish to increase their knowledge in this area.

Students can design their own program of study, in consultation with academic staff, based on their background knowledge and area of interest. In addition to the core units, students are able to select two units across areas of study.

The Graduate Certificate will be awarded at the level of Pass, Pass with Credit, Pass with Distinction or Pass with High Distinction depending on the level of academic achievement.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate will be qualified for professional positions dealing with GIS and remote sensing.

Entry Requirements

The requirement for admission to candidature is a three-year Bachelor degree with a knowledge of the basic sciences - biology, chemistry and statistics.

Applicants with other qualifications and professional experience will also be considered.

Advanced Standing Advanced standing may be granted for a maximum of six cp on the basis previous study completed at a recognised tertiary institution or on the basis of relevant profiessional experience.

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science in 2008.

1. Admission to Candidature

1.1. An applicant for admission to candidature for the certificate shall:

(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a degree, or an equivalent qualification, acceptable to the school as sufficient qualification for admission to candidature; or

(b) satisfy the school by means of other qualifications and/or relevant experience that adequate preparation for candidature has been made.

1.2. Admission to candidature and the date of commencement of candidature shall be determined by the school on the recommendation of the relevant postgraduate course co-ordinator.

2. Program of Study

Each program of study shall be prescribed by the faculty on the recommendation of the relevant postgraduate course co-ordinator and shall comprise units at 200-level or higher with a total value of 24 credit points.
