Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Accounting is a course that will service the needs of students requiring four or less units for accreditation with the professional accounting bodies. It can serve as an entry and exit point for the Master of Professional Accounting. The course comprises four units (that is 24 credit points) which can be completed over a period of 1 trimester, subject to unit scheduling. The course may cover introductory as well as advanced units in accounting, finance, systems, law, auditing, economics and business statistics. Students who complete the course meet the requirements for accreditation by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, CPA Australia or the National Institute of Accountants.

Intensive Schools Intensive mandatory schools may be a requirement of some of the units in this course. See Unit Catalogue for specific requirements.
Entry Requirements

Applicants for admission to candidature for the Graduate Certificate in Accounting shall:

(a) have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a three-year degree or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the faculty as sufficient qualification for admission to candidature; or

(b)satisfy the faculty by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature.

Course Rules

1.Admission to Candidature
1.1. This course is available on a fee-paying basis only.
1.2. Applicants for admission to candidature for the Graduate Certificate in Accounting shall:

(a)    have fulfilled all the requirements for admission to a three-year degree or an equivalent qualification  as sufficient qualification for admission to candidature; or
(b)    satisfy the Course Coordinator by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature.

1.3. In addition, applicants for admission to candidature under Rule 1.2 (b) must provide evidence of at least three years work experience in a field of employment approved by the Course Coordinator.

1.4. An applicant for candidature shall apply to the Course Coordinator on the prescribed form.

1.5.Admission to candidature and the date of commencement of candidature shall be determined by the school.

2. Approval of Course of Study
After admission to candidature, a candidate shall have a course of study approved by the Course Coordinator.

3. Requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Accounting
3.1.To satisfy the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Accounting, a candidate shall complete the course work program approved by the Course Coordinator.

3.2.The course work program shall include units to the value of 24 credit points from the following:  GSB 644, 641, 642, 701, 703, 711, 728, 741, 743, 748, 749, 750.

4. Period of Candidature
4.1. Candidates shall complete the prescribed course work program in not more than three trimesters of 15 weeks’ duration of full-time study and not more than six 15-week trimesters of part-time study. There will be three 15-week trimesters in each calendar year.

4.2.In exceptional circumstances the Course Coordinator may extend the period of candidature for a period or periods totalling not more than two trimesters.

5. Advanced Standing
5.1.At the discretion of the school, on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator a candidate may be granted advanced standing for:

(a) up to 12 credit points on the basis of units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program; or

(b) up to 12 credit points on the basis of postgraduate units that have not been counted towards any qualification provided they have a reasonable degree of correspondence to units prescribed for the course work program; or

(c)    up to 12 credit points for other significant learning which the Course Coordinator considers equivalent to units prescribed for the course work program;

6. Improper Conduct
Candidates are referred to the University Policy on Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct.

Career Opportunities

Students who complete this award may be eligible for Associate membership of CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) or the National Institute of Accountants (NIA). They can then pursue full professional status with the organisation of their choice.
