Why study the Bachelor of Medicine - Joint Medical Program at UNE?
The Bachelor of Medicine - Joint Medical Program (BMed-JMP) program will be offered jointly by the University of Newcastle and the University of New England. The curriculum for this program, will be identical at both institutions. Applicants successful in gaining entry to the BMed-JMP will be offered a place at either the University of Newcastle or the University of New England based on the preference listed on their JMP direct on-line University application.
The BMed- JMP curriculum is centred on problem-based learning with clinical and basic sciences integrated throughout the program. Clinical exposure (dealing with patients, visiting hospital wards and outpatient clinics, and spending time with doctors in practice) begins in first year and continues throughout the program.
The BMed-JMP and future professional practice is both mentally and physically demanding. Prospective students should be aware that physical capabilities sufficient to perform all aspects of routine medical practices, such as physical examination, and routine medical and surgical procedures, are required in order to meet program requirements.
Information booklets (University of Newcastle/University of New England-Joint Medical Program Bachelor of Medicine Selection Procedure 2009') will be distributed to secondary schools in NSW and the ACT in July. | Entry Requirements | Admission to candidature shall be determined on the basis of previous Year 12 studies, or Higher education qualifications, or overseas qualifications considered equivalent to Australian qualifications; and resuls of the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test (UMAT); and interview as determined by the Joint Medical Program Governing Committee. Assumed knowledge is any two units of English. Rural/Remote students: Students who can demonstrate a significant rural/remote background may be eligible to apply under the Rural/Remote Admissions Scheme (RRAS). | Additional Requirements | In addition to submitting a UAC application, you must: (i) Submit a Bachelor of Medicine-JMP direct University application with the Faculty of Health, University of Newcastle by 28 September 2007. Late applications will not be accepted. Applications must be lodged on-line. The online application will open in August 2008 and will be available at www.newcastle.edu.au/jmp: (ii) Register to sit the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test (UMAT) with the UMAT office by 6 June 2008.. Late applications will be accepted until 20 June 2008. (iii) Lodge an application with UAC - the closing date for on-time UAC applications is 30 September 2008. Upon payment of the appropriate late fee, late applications will be accepted by UAC. Include 780000 (CSP). B Medicine-JMP as a preference on the UAC application by 28 November 2008. Further information may be obtained from the UAC website: www.uac.edu.au (iv) Attend a UMAT session at the nominated test site on 30 July 2008; (v) Attend an interview during November or December, if required; and (vi) Be selected in competition with other eligible applicants. |
| Practical, Clinical or Work Experience | Candidates will be required to spend up to 2 semesters away from their university of enrolment while undertaking clinical placements. Time spent in the Year 3 Health Equity Selective and the Year 5 Primary Health Care Selective shall not be included in the minimum 2-semester clinical placement requirement. Candidates may elect to undertake placements of up to 2 years in an approved 'away' location. Candidates will be responsible for all costs associated with travel and accommodation for 'away' placements. |
| Advanced Standing | Advanced standing will not be granted towards the course. Under the terms of the Joint Medical Program, the University of New England policy on advanced standing does not apply. |
