Why study the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) at UNE?

After completing a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), graduates may apply to continue studying for a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education). The course focuses on the birth to eight year old age group and is designed to be responsive to the diverse employment opportunities of early childhood teachers and related services. There is a primary pathway option within the BEd (ECE) course.

Teacher Registration: Students should note that teacher registration requirements vary from state to state. UNE bases its degree structures on the NSW Institute of Teachers guidelines for teacher registration (website: www.nswteachers.nsw.edu.au/). It is the responsibility of each student to check their eligibility to teach with the relevant state authority (including students who intend to teach in NSW).

Entry Requirements

A candidate must hold a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood comprising of three years of study recognised by the Faculty as suitable for entry into the course.

Additional Requirements

Prohibited Employment Declaration and Probity Checks: In response to the NSW Department of Education and Training's requirement to meet legal obligations in respect to the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998, the University has guidelines regarding students undertaking field experience. All students are required to declare whether they are a prohibited person by completing a Prohibited Employment Declaration.

In addition, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has introduced probity (criminal record) checks for all student teachers participating in unsupervised situations with school students. Education Queensland and the ACT Department of Education require probity checks for all students undertaking any school experience in Queensland or the ACT. Students should be aware that they will be subject to criminal record checks on behalf of potential NSW employers after completing the course and prior to receiving clearance as an independent classroom teacher.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

A 15-day professional experience is an integral part of the unit Early Childhood Professional Practice 1. It may be necessary for some students to complete another professional practice experience to meet the requirements of the State they reside in. The unit Early Childhood Professional Practice 2 incorporates an additional 15 days. Each professional experience will be undertaken outside each student's own worksite. If you are following the primary pathway your professional practice should be done in the early years at a primary school.

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) in 2008.

1. Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall hold a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood comprising of three years of study recognised by the school as suitable for entry into the course.

2. Award of the Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements listed under Rule 3.1. shall be awarded the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education).

3. Course Requirements
To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) a candidate who has been admitted under Rule 1.(a) shall pass 48 credit points including all units in Group 1A and at least 18 credit points from Group 1B.

4. Period of Candidature
For candidates admitted under Rules 1.(a) the maximum period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) three years as a part-time candidate.

5. Progress and Conduct
5.1. Refer to the University General Rule on Academic Progress.
5.2. Failure to meet professional experience and practice teaching requirements shall be deemed to be unsatisfactory progress.

6. Code of Ethics
Candidates are required to abide by the Code of Ethics for general contact with schools and professional experience as laid down by the school.
