Bachelor of Computer Science

Why study the Bachelor of Computer Science at UNE?

In this course each major includes a sequence of study in computer science including architecture and assembler, software engineering, data structures, operating systems, databases, programming in Java, networks, multimedia, game programming, data mining, software project management, etc. The major completed will appear on the academic record and testamur. There is opportunity for articulation from the NSW TAFE Diploma in Information Technology. A fourth year is required for Honours.

Career Opportunities

Examples include technical positions in e-business, internet and networking specialists, specialized financial computer programs, software solution designers, and careers in economic modelling, artificial intelligence, game programming and electronic product design.

Students who complete the double degree BCompSc/LLB also find employment in banking, management and the Diplomatic Service.

Entry Requirements

Normal admission requirements apply. Assumed knowledge is Mathematics at NSW HSC level, or equivalent and students without the recommended background knowledge, the Faculty offers a Foundation unit in Mathematics.

Students are also able to articulate into the BCompSc(Information Technology) on completion of the NSW TAFE Diploma in Information Technology or equivalent which counts for 72 credit points.

Double Degree Opportunities A Bachelor of Computer Science/Bachelor of Laws is offered. Successful candidates for this double program are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Computer Science and the degree of Bachelor of Laws.
Advanced Standing Advanced standing for 72 credit points is granted on the basis of a completed TAFE qualification approved by the Faculty.
Honours A fourth Honours year is available to students with an above average academic record. Course requirements usually include a research project with thesis, reading assignments and essays. BCompSc(Hons) graduates who achieve the appropriate level of Honours are eligible to apply to enrol for a research Master degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Scholarships The University offers a number of Faculty/College and country scholarships available to Australian citizens and permanent residents.

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 48 credit points, or the Advanced Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 72 credit points.

Any Diploma in Information Technology of NSW TAFE or equivalent
Credit for 9 units unspecified. The unspecified credit is for the IT sub major component of the Bachelor of Computer Science degree. Students would be required to complete the Computer Science component to complete the degree.
Advanced standing can be given up to 3 further units from the core Computer Science program if sufficient documents are provided to assess the equivalence to such units. It is recommended that the documents are provided to assess the equivalence to COMP131 and/or COMP132, if the student wishes to complete the degree in earliest possible time. Note that both COMP131 and COMP132 involve C++ programming.

NSW TAFE Certificate IV in Information Technology or equivalent.
Any Certificate IV in Information Technology of NSW TAFE or equivalent
Credit for 6 units unspecified for the IT sub major component of the Bachelor of Computer Science degree.
