Why study the Bachelor of Agriculture/Bachelor of Laws at UNE?

This double degree program examines the principles and practices modern rural industries and their intersection with the legal system; development of scientific and legal reasoning and inquiry; and critical analysis of complex circumstances. It will provide the skills, working individually and as part of a team, to apply these developing skills to current and future problems especially at interface of agricultural business, science, economics and law. The legal qualification meets the academic requirements for admission as a legal practitioner in all Australian States and Territories.

Career Opportunities

Examples include positions in foreign affairs and trade, State Department of Agriculture, Food Standards of Australia, dairy industry, product development, federal departments, solicitor or barrister.

The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW and mutual recognition legislation extends admission to other Australian jurisdictions. After completion of academic qualifications in Law, entry to legal practice also requires the completion of a Practical Legal Training (PLT) course.

Summer Semester provides an opportunity for students to fast-track their academic progression or to catch up on units required to complete the degree. A selection of units are offered off-campus during the normal semester break from November to February, enabling students to study from home and to accelerate their progress towards graduation.

Law Students' Society: There is an active Law Students' Society at UNE, which organises inter-varsity mooting and social activites for students. The Society also represents the interests of Law students through its elected representatives on School Committees and provides a range of services for Law alumni as well as facilitating links between legal practitioners and students.

Entry Requirements

Normal admission requirements apply. Assumed knowledge is 2 units in English. Mathematics and Chemistry are essential for this double degree combination. Biology and Chemistry are essential for this double degree combination. Biology is recommended studies. Law students are expected to have reliable internet access.

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Practical Experience: 16 weeks of practical experience in semester breaks are required for the Bachelor of Agriculture component.

Advanced Standing Agriculture: Students may be granted advanced standing towards the BAgr component of the double degree program on the basis of study completed at an approved tertiary institution. Law: Credit may be given for prior study in any Australian program that meets the academic requirements for admission as a legal practitioner (including courses offered by the NSW Legal Practitioner's Admission Board or its equivalent). Advanced standing cannot be given for work experience or legal studies that are not part of a course that meets admission requirements.
Fast Track Summer Semester is available for selected law units on a full-fee basis
Honours Agriculture: On completion of 144 credit points including all requirements for the BAgr component of the double degree program, students with a meritorious academic record may be permitted to enrol for the Bachelor of Science with Honours. The Honours year in Science requires the completion of a research project and the submission of a thesis embodying a literature review and the results of the research project. Law: Students who have achieved a grade point average of 5.5 or better in the preceding eight law units (P=4, C=5, D=6, HD=7) may be admitted to the Honours Program in the final year of study. This program is based on a thesis of 15,000 words. The Honours result is based on the grade awarded for the thesis plus grades for the best 15 units towards the degree.

To qualify for the two awards a candidate shall complete a total of 240 credit points comprising:
Bachelor of Agriculture component: 96 credit points;
Bachelor of Laws component: 144 credit points.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the double degree program may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Agriculture on completion of 48 credit points, the Advanced Diploma in Agriculture on completion of 72 credit points; or may transfer from the double degree program to the Bachelor of Agriculture.

Period of Candidature

The maximum period of candidature shall be 7 years as a full-time candidate and 15 years as a part-time candidate.
