Unit Description

This unit is designed to give students some understanding of the craft of the playwright and the role of a play within a community. Students will gain experience in reading secondary sources and in writing about the theatre. In the internal mode, assignments also require students to interpret text for performance and to operate as a stage technician. In external mode, students keep a workbook in which they answer questions and complete tasks (relating to the playwright's craft) and write an essay on the relationship between plays in performance and scholarly criticism. If studied in internal mode there are, on average, one hour of lectures, one hour of tutorials and two hours of workshop/rehearsals per week. If studied in external mode there is an optional residential school for this unit.
