Unit Description

This unit begins by considering theoretical accounts of power, demonstrating that it operates in many more subtle ways than generally imagined. The second part investigates the strategies of power actually exercised in the social world, covering such topics as the state, exchange practices, discourse, conversations, gender, medicine, and the body. Students should obtain a grounding in approaches to the sociology of power and an ability to analyse power relations in theoretical and empirical settings.
