Unit Description

This unit deals with the scientific study of the mental processes that underlie cognitive activity: the acquisition, retention, and use of knowledge. Topics include: the historical origins of cognitive research; perception; attention; memory; concepts; reasoning; and consciousness. Theoretical principles and practical applications are both highlighted. Assessment involves one written assignment and two exams.
