Unit Description

This unit considers ethical debates that arise in contemporary public life over a number of important and contentious social issues. Topics covered will include just war theory, terrorism, censorship, retributive justice and capital punishment, privacy and surveillance, freedom of speech, commodification, and the justification of property rights amongst others. The unit will explore the writings of a variety of social philosophers on these topics and, in particular, the more general ethical frameworks they employ to address such issues. Through the examination of these topics from a philosophical point of view, students will become acquainted with the major traditions of ethics.
