Unit Description

This unit introduces students to what public policy is and how to study it. Topics include a discussion of the nature of the policy sciences with special consideration given to economic and political approaches. Actors in the policy process are considered in some detail along with the role of institutions and policy instruments. Particular emphasis is placed on developing an appreciation of the policy cycle: agenda setting, policy formulation, decision-making, implementation, and evaluation. The unit concludes with an analysis of knowledge and power in the policy process.
