Unit Description

In the digital age, the law enters into and seeks to regulate a new domain - cyberspace. As well, cyberspace enters into and modifies the practice of law. This law-IT interface marks a new and exciting frontier. It is vital for any person engaging with the law in the digital age to know the legal perils, risks and liabilities arising within, and the challenges and opportunities presented to the law by, this new domain. In this unit, you will study: the Internet and the advent of the information society; Internet regulation and jurisdiction; copyright (including moral rights and rights in databases), domain names, trade marks, software patents and e-commerce; electronic contracts, drafting technology contracts, electronic signatures and encryption; privacy and defamation on the Internet; Internet regulation, Internet crime and e-security. Reflecting the unit aims, objectives and content, this unit is only offered externally and is taught exclusively online. There is no residential school. Teaching and learning strategies revolve around the LS 377 web-page, utilizing WebCT. These strategies require you to engage with Internet technology and participate in active learning situations. You will participate in the on-line discussion forum; develop practical skills in legal drafting, engage in problem solving and in-depth legal research.
