Unit Description

This unit provides an overall insight into the origins, the development and significance of 'Australitalian', a local community language, in terms of the vital role this idiom plays in preserving the Italian culture in Australia. It involves a comprehensive linguistic study of the changes which occurred to the language of the Italian migrants in Australia as a result of its contact with English, and a review of the implications of such contact on the migrated community and on Australian society at large.
