Unit Description

Indonesia has one of the largest Muslim populations in the world. The history of the spread of Islam from the Middle East to the archipelago, and its attraction for very different groups of people in the islands, throws light on the particular character of Islam in Indonesian communities. Emphasis is given to the social nature of Islam in village life, abangan and santri Muslims in their different attitudes to life, and Islamic political movements.
