Unit Description

This unit comprises up to 26 lecture hours and 12 tutorial hours. It is one of a suite of units in economic history. The unit examines the economic and social transformation of Southeast Asia in the context of globalisation and the integration of the region into the international economy. It familiarises students with the major countries of the region: Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and surveys the development of particular economic sectors in selected countries. These include agriculture (rice, rubber); mining and manufacturing. The unit also explores demographic change, the international division of labour, changing labour relations, industrialisation, and the social and environmental impacts of resource development in Southeast Asia.
