Unit Description

This unit is the foundation for the computer science strand, introducing techniques for computer program development using a high-level structured programming language. Topics include: control structures; data types; algorithm design and analysis; hardware components; a user view of operating systems and computer networks. The unit also includes a component on social implications, ethics and professional practice in information technology. COMP 531 is based on the undergraduate unit COMP 131 with additional load consisting of extra questions on the examination. Candidates for COMP 531 will be expected to show a greater level of understanding of the unit material than that required for COMP 131. Students who complete COMP 131 are not permitted to enrol for COMP 531. Students enrolled for COMP 131A will obtain a deeper understanding of the subject through extra reading and solving challenging problems.
