Unit Description

This six-credit point unit is designed for students who have completed at least three years study of Mandarin Chinese, or the equivalent, and who also have advanced competence in written English. The unit introduces theoretical issues related to translation in general and provides insights into the major linguistic and cultural issues in translating Chinese in particular. Attention is paid to the development of translation skills, strategies and resources. Texts cover a wide range of subject matter and text-types. Students normally work mainly though not exclusively from Chinese to English.
