| Unit Description |
This unit comprises the first half of an introduction to the chemical principles required for further study in chemistry within the BSc, as well as other disciplines including biochemistry, genetics, geology, and molecular biology, physiology, soil science and zoology. It is an important unit in the BRurSc, BNatRes and BEngTech degrees and streams of the BEnvSc. CHEM 110 comprises atomic structure and chemical bonding, introductory organic chemistry (structure and properties of basic functional groups) and introductory physical chemistry (thermochemistry, gases, liquids and solids, solutions, equilibria and acid/base chemistry). Assessment is by assignments, practical exercises, on-line quizzes and an examination. CHEM 110A offers extra depth in material covered by CHEM 110, given as extra reading topics and increased depth of coverage. There is also a higher level of degree of difficulty in assessment tasks and extra workshop/tutorial sessions. |
