| Unit Description |
Australian Museum, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and UNE staff will present this unit. Using a phylogenetic approach, this unit introduces the principles and practices of systematics (ie broadly evolutionary relationships and taxonomy of biodiversity) through lectures, tutorials and practicals. Topics will include cladistics and phenetics, character definition and homology, data basing and manipulating taxonomic data, character evolution, and phylogenetic reconstruction. Practical skills are developed in order to address current issues and practices in systematics. BIOL 301A will cover material in greater depth than BIOL 301 with separate assignments being completed. BIOL 501 is based on BIOL 301 with additional assessment tasks requiring a greater depth of understanding of the material. |
