Why study the Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) at UNE?
Applied Linguistics is a field which explores how language functions in the world, first and second language acquisition and intercultural communication. This online degree will appeal to students wanting a professionally relevant higher qualification who do not have a background in Linguistics, as well as those considering postgraduate careers in the growing fields of Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The degree is fully on-line (with multi-media support on CD-ROM), using bulletin boards, chat rooms, and other web-based resources, with some provision of printed materials. This online format allows all Masters students to participate equally, regardless of geographic location. The MA (Applied Linguistics) is primarily a course-work degree. The standard program consists of eight 400-level units each worth 6 credit points. Students may also be able to undertake 12 credit points of research (LING490 'Special Research Topic') Graduates who have completed 25% of the program with a dissertation unit (12cps) may be eligible to apply for the Doctor of Philosophy.

| Entry Requirements | Applicants should hold a degree from a recognised university. Any qualified student will be able to enrol. They must also have access to the www and a computer with a CD-ROM drive. International students from non-English speaking countries require evidence of English proficiency such as TOEFL(550) or IELTS (overall 6; subtests 5.5). |
| Advanced Standing | A candidate may be granted advanced standing to a maximum of 12 credit points on the basis of units passed elsewhere provided they have reasonable correspondence to units in the degree. |

Information for Continuing Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) Students for 2008
Course Requirements
(a) Candidates must pass units to the value of 48 cp at 400 level or above from the following units.
(b) All units in Group I must be included.
(c) Candidates may not enrol in any unit or units which has equivalent subject matter to a unit completed in a previous award.
(d) With the permission of the Course Coordinator, candidates may be permitted to substitute Group II units for Group I units, up to a value of 12 cp.
(e) In special circumstances a candidate may substitute other units at 400-level for Group II up to the value of 12 cp.

LING 450, 451, 452, 453
Group II:
EDLA 419, 423; LING 460, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 467; 468 and
Group III:
LING 490 (12 cp) (permission from the Head of School is required before enrolment).
