Why study the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) at UNE?

This is an enhanced version of the Bachelor of Science. The course offers students the opportunity to study a range of subjects to an advanced level through extra topics, more challenging laboratory experiments and closer, individual contact with academic staff. Advanced studies are available in Biochemistry, Botany, Biosystematics,Chemistry, Computer Science, Genetics, Mathematics, Physiology, Physics, Microbiology and Zoology. To remain in this degree program, a student must maintain a high level of performance.

BSC(Adv) graduates are qualified to fill high level positions in research establishments (eg, Australian Atomic Energy Commission, Departments of Primary Industry, Resource Management, Water and Land Resources, CSIRO, Environmental Protection Authorities, Forestry Commissions, National Parks and Wildlife Services, hospitals, etc.) and in industry (eg, computing, electronics, lasers, manufacturing, mining, oil companies, consultancy companies, patent offices).

Entry Requirements

The BSc(Adv) is available for students with an above average HSC score in Science including Chemistry and Physics. HSC Mathematics Extension 1 is recommended. Students that excel in first-year subjects may also be permitted to change from the normal BSc to the BSc(Adv).

Advanced Standing Advanced standing may be granted on the basis of previous studies completed at a recognised tertiary institution.
Honours A fourth Honours year is available to students with an above average academic record. Study would be undertaken in one of the disciplines chosen for specialisation leading to the course of Bachelor of Science (Advanced ) with Honours. Completion of the BSc(Adv)(Hons) can lead to further postgraduate study, for example, PhD.
Scholarships The University offers a number of Faculty/College and country scholarships available to Australian citizens and permanent residents.

Information for Continuing Bachelor of Science Advanced Students for 2008

• Bachelor of Science Advanced students who are continuing in the course in 2008 should refer to the Bachelor of Science course information for continuing students when selecting units for study for 2008.

Course Requirements
To satisfy degree requirements, candidates must complete units to the value of at least 144 cp chosen from those listed for the Bachelor of Science. Of these 144 cp at least 36 cp must be for Advanced units at a grade of at least Distinction. Continuing students re-enrolling for 2008 should contact the course coordinator regarding this requirement. 18 cp must be from Group 3a.
