Overview

Science aims to understand the world around us and to use that knowledge to improve our quality of life. It is the basis of all technology and provides the information and techniques which we can use to solve problems associated with pollution, health and the environment. It is not necessary on entering University to have firm ideas about an area of specialisation since this will become clear during the course of study. Students who study science at UNE can take advantage of excellent facilities and opportunities for field work.

Entry Requirements

It is assumed that students enrolling in this degree will have Mathematics and Chemistry and/or Physics at NSW HSC level, or equivalent.

The Faculty offers Foundation Studies in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for students who do not have the recommended background knowledge.
Course Rules

Information for Continuing Bachelor of Science Students for 2008

Bachelor of Science Advanced students should note that advanced level units will no longer appear in the unit schedule in 2008. Arrangements will be made by unit coordinators for students in the Bachelor of Science Advanced. For further information, consult your Course Coordinator.

Course Requirements (pre 2008)
To satisfy degree requirements candidates must complete units with a value of at least 144 cp. Candidates also have the opportunity to complete one of the following prescribed course work programs:
Biomedical Science
Biosystematics
Ecology
Horticultural Science
Marine Science and Management or
Molecular Biotechnology.

Streams and Majors (pre 2008)
Course work programs: There are six approved course work programs in the Bachelor of Science listed in the complete course structure. Candidates who complete one of these course work programs will have the name of the program entered on their transcript of academic record and testamur.

Majors: Students may choose to complete a major in the Bachelor of Science as an alternative to completing a course work program. In order to complete a major, students must complete at least 24 cp at 300-level in a subject, for example, GEOL or CHEM or BOTY or ZOOL, etc.
Students may have up to two majors recorded on their transcript. Students cannot complete both an approved course work program and a major.

Double Degree Opportunities A double degree program of Science and Laws is offered. Successful candidates for this double program are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science and the degree of Bachelor of Laws. A combined degree of Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science is also offered.
Advanced Standing Advanced standing may be granted on the basis of previous study.
Other Benefits

Careers are available in areas such as research establishments (eg, Australian Atomic Energy Commission, CSIRO, Environmental Protection Authorities, Forestry Commissions, National Parks and Wildlife Services, hospitals, etc.); in industry (eg, computing, electronics, lasers, manufacturing, mining, oil companies, consultancy companies, nurseries, patent offices); in herbaria and museums. Many graduates have gone on to careers as teachers, researchers and administrators in universities and schools.

Combining the Bachelor of Science and a Graduate Diploma - Graduate Diplomas which can be completed in this way are in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geographic Information Science, Marine Science and Management, Natural Resources, Science and Rural Science. These programs are taken over four years of full-time study and entry into the Diploma component of the course is after completion of the first two years (96 credit points) of the BSc.
Honours A fourth Honours year is available to students with an above average academic record. Study is undertaken in one of the disciplines chosen for specialisation leading to the award of Bachelor of Science with Honours. The BSc(Hons) degree can lead to further postgraduate study.
Scholarships The University offers a number of scholarships available to Australian citizens and permanent residents.
