Bachelor of Nursing

Why study the Bachelor of Nursing at UNE?

Nursing plays a key role in health services across the world, and professional nurses work in a wide variety of settings. The Bachelor of Nursing course at UNE equips graduates with the key knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of nursing. The degree also aims to give graduates an appreciation of the value of life-long learning and a firm foundation for further study at a post-graduate level.

A central aim of the course is to prepare graduate nurses for registration as professional nurses with the New South Wales Nurses Registration Board.

Clinical Placement: The Bachelor of Nursing has been designed with a large compulsory component of clinical praxis. Candidates must complete 30 weeks of praxis (clinical practice), which is undertaken in each semester.

The aim of this practical experience is for candidates to integrate and extend their knowledge and experience. During praxis candidates have the opportunity to develop the level of functioning required of a graduate nurse.

As all praxis cannot be undertaken in Armidale candidates will need to allow for the cost of some travel and accommodation.

Benefits

UNE has been at the forefront of nurse education longer than any other university in Australia. UNE was the first tertiary education provider in Australia to offer distance education for nurses and the first to implement the preceptor model of undergraduate clinical teaching on a large scale. UNE nurse graduates are well respected within the profession, they are critical thinkers, and well prepared educationally for the professional challenges they will face.

Entry Requirements

No prior knowledge of nursing or other health-related area is necessary. Entry to the first year of the degree is open to candidates who have an assumed knowledge of any 2 units of English and any 2 units in a science subject (other than mathematics) at HSC levels and have obtained an appropriate NSW or Queensland equivalent Score or an equivalent qualification. There is provision for entry by the School/College Recommendation Admission Scheme.

Alternative and Special Entry candidates are required to demonstrate a good command of English and to answer a questionnaire. Further details are available from the University's Admissions Unit.

Additional Requirements

Applicants for the Bachelor of Nursing degree must have a current First Aid Certificate which is WorkCover approved. This certificate should be completed before commencing study, however if necessary candidates can attend a course during first semester through the Armidale Ambulance Service at a cost of approximately $100.

Candidates are also required to be immunised for Hepatitis B. This can be done through your doctor and a follow-up blood test to check your immunity levels will also be necessary. This process involves a series of three injections over a period of time.

Candidates must also be tested for Tuberculosis by having a Mantoux test and if necessary a follow-up vaccination. These tests are organised early in the first semester and conducted free of charge by the Chest Clinic in Tamworth.

Candidates will be required to bring copies of documentation confirming completion of the First Aid Certificate and Hepatitis B immunisation for collection during orientation week. If candidates do not have these it is unlikely that they will be permitted to undertake their first clinical placement.

Criminal Records Check: The NSW Department of Health has a policy that all staff, including candidates undertaking clinical placements, in positions dealing with children and other vulnerable people must undergo a criminal record check. This check will be conducted by the NSW Police and will be coordinated by the Department of Health.

Scholarships The University offers a number of Faculty/College and country scholarships available to Australian citizens and permanent residents.
