Bachelor of Education (Primary)
Why study the Bachelor of Education (Primary) at UNE?
Teaching is a rewarding career choice for those who enjoy being part of children's development. The professional skills learned will be valued by the community and will bring teachers into contact with people of all ages. Teachers are members of one of the largest professions of our society.
The Bachelor of Education is a four year, professionally-oriented degree. The program has been designed with the support and assistance of members of the teaching profession. As well as gaining generalist training in infants and primary education, students will have the opportunity to focus their studies in specific Key Learning Areas or in specialist fields of professional practice including Aboriginal Studies, LOTE, Special Needs and Computers and Technology in Education.
The degree will give students the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become a successful teacher. Students are encouraged to be independent learners who are able to adapt efficiently and constructively to meet the changes which occur in the teaching profession.
Professional Experience: Students undertake a practicum, or professional experience, which allows a significant proportion of student teacher learning to occur in schools and other educational sites. These experiences are designed to support students in forming their own links between the academic knowledge they develop at the university and the practical knowledge they can observe, model and individually create within the classroom and school.
Each of the units within the curriculum has a practicum component included, providing opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge and integrate learning from separate units.
A range of practicum structures is employed at different stages of the course including individual dispersed days, longer block school experience and an extended internship. This range of structure allows students to move from initial stages of observation and modelling of teaching practice towards the development of individual conceptions of teaching. The goal of this practical component is to equip students with the capacity to become critically reflective practitioners, capable of responding creatively to a variety of teaching challenges and contexts.
