Bachelor of Economics/Bachelor of Laws

Why study the Bachelor of Economics/Bachelor of Laws at UNE?

The Bachelor of Economics/ Bachelor of Laws offers graduates broad career opportunites.

The Bachelor of Laws qualifies graduates for admission to legal practice in NSW and other States and Territories, after completion of a professional legal training course. However, entry into legal practice is not necessarily the dominant career path for law graduates. Many find employment in areas such as business, banking, management, the Public Service, the Diplomatic Service, counselling, social work and teaching where their knowledge of law enhances their worth.

The Bachelor of Economics provides students with an understanding of the functioning of a modern economy and a capacity to analyse the causes and consequences of economic change. The knowledge and skills acquired in the Economics degree program can give graduates a head start in the search for a rewarding and challenging career.

The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Practitioners Admission Board of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW and mutual recognition legislation extends admission to other Australian jurisdictions. After completion of academic qualifications in law, entry to legal practice also requires the completion of a Practical Legal Training (PLT) course.

Summer Semester provides an opportunity for students to fast-track their academic progression or to catch up on units required to complete the degree. A selection of units is offered off-campus during the normal semester break from November to February, enabling students to study from home and to accelerate their progress towards graduation.

Law Students' Society: There is an active Law students' Society at UNE, which organises inter-varsity mooting and social activities for students. The Society also represents the interests of Law students through its elected representatives on School Committees and provides a range of services for Law alumni as well as facilitating links between legal practitioners and students.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the first year of the degrees is open to students who have obtained an appropriate NSW University Admission Index (UAI) or Queensland Tertiary Equivalent score or an equivalent qualification.

Provision is made for alternative entry on the basis of criteria other than formal secondary education, based on previous work and academic experiences. A sound knowledge of English is essential for enrolment in courses offered by the Faculty of Economics, Business and Law. However, some units in the economics, finance and quantitative areas it is recommended that students have previously studied mathematics. Law students are expected to have reliable internet access.
