Our Mythical Childhood: Celebrating the European Research Council’s 10th Anniversary

Date: Fri 24th Mar 2017 10:00am-11:00am

The UNE community is cordially invited to attend Introducing Our Mythical Childhood: Classical Antiquity in Children’s Culture from the Global South presented by Dr Elizabeth Hale (Arts, UNE) and A/Prof Marguerite Johnson (Classics, Newcastle).

This talk introduces the UNE wing of the Our Mythical Childhood.

Our Mythical Childhood is an international project led by Prof. Katarzyna Marciniak, University of Warsaw.  It aims to develop a pioneering interdisciplinary approach to the reception of Classical Antiquity in children’s and young adult culture around the world. Children’s texts of all types are surveyed in a wide-ranging study. Under the direction of Elizabeth Hale, the UNE wing gathers and analyses texts from the Southern Hemisphere, to examine how writers, artists, creators, educators and of course children receive and respond to Classical Antiquity in this part of the world.

How does the culture from the foundational stages of life draw on the fundamental texts of western culture?  How does classical antiquity connect with and comment on childhood and adolescence?  And how do children’s cultural materials transform the texts of classical antiquity, around the world?

This event is part of a world-wide series of events held in mid-late March to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the European Research Council. The ERC’s Horizon 20/20 program of research funding supports the Our Mythical Childhood project through a Consolidator Grant.

Friday 24 March, from 10-11 am, Arts Lecture Theatre A3.
