Classical Studies Units

CLST 320: Classical Studies Special Option A

Dr Paul Roche

Available internally and externally in either semester 1 or 2. There is no Residential School.

The aim of this unit is to allow students to undertake a programme of reading or pursue an individual research project to meet special interests in the fields of Greek, Latin, Ancient History, or European Cultures. The unit is intended primarily for students who are preparing themselves for Honours candidature; but it also allows those who have special interest in a topic covered only briefly in one of our units (or not covered at all) to explore that interest in depth. In very exceptional circumstances it may be used to study an existing unit when the latter is not offered in a particular semester.
CLST 320 is worth 6 credit points and may be taken in either semester 1 or 2 of any year (subject to a suitable supervisor being available). Although the prerequisite for entry to CLST 320 is any 12 credit points at 200 level in Ancient History, Greek, Latin, Classical Languages, or European Cultures, it is strongly recommended that students have already completed some 300 level units as well. Since the programmes involve individual arrangements, normally enrolment in these units will be restricted to students who have gained Credit level passes (or better) in some of the earlier units taken in the subject of the proposed programme. Permission of the supervisor and the Head of School is essential prior to enrolment.
Because of the staff-intensive nature of the unit, it is not always possible to offer CLST 320 every year or in every area taught in the School. Intending students must consult the Head of the School to secure approval in the year prior to that in which candidature is planned. Approval is by no means automatic.
Students in Ancient History may also consider HIST 380, 381, 382 for a special study of ancient history topics.

CLST 321: Classical Studies Special Option B

Professor Greg Horsley

Available internally and externally in either semester 1 or 2. There is no Residential School.

Like CLST 320, this unit aims to allow students to undertake a program of reading or pursue an individual reading project to meet special interests in Classical Languages, European Cultures or Ancient History. Students must normally have already enrolled in all other available CLLA or Ancient History units prior to seeking entry to this unit. The unit may be undertaken in either first or second semester. Permission of the supervisor and the Head of School is essential prior to enrolment.
