CLLA 101: Introduction to Classical Languages

An intensive introduction to Classical Greek and Latin, offered in two separate strands within the unit. Candidates must choose either Greek or Latin, and will normally remain with the language strand chosen in any further units taken in the sequence. No previous knowledge of the selected language is required. In addition to exposure to the grammar of the language and to reading continuous text, students will encounter a wide range of aspects of Greek or Roman culture and society. For those needing it, the unit will improve control of English as a bonus.

CLLA 102: Classical Languages Through Reading

This unit builds on the work undertaken in CLLA 101, and focuses increasingly on the reading of ancient texts. Candidates must remain in the language strand already selected in CLLA 101, either Greek or Latin. By the end of the unit students will have read a considerable amount of selected Greek or Latin texts, and improved their command of the language.

CLLA 201: Intermediate Classical Languages

This unit builds on the study of Greek or Latin in CLLA 101 and 102 with the intention that all major constructions will be understood by the end of the unit. Practice is given in reading unseen passages in the original. In addition, one major literary text will be read with attention given to content as well as syntax. Candidates must continue to follow the language strand selected in the first year units.

CLLA 202: Intermediate Classical Texts

In this unit, students in each strand (Greek or Latin) will read two major texts in order to achieve understanding of them both at a linguistic level and for their literary/historical significance. The texts set may vary from year to year.

CLLA 301: Advanced Classical Languages

This unit provides further consolidation of Greek or Latin syntax and style at an advanced level. Emphasis is given to reading unseen passages in the original. In addition, one major literary text will be read with attention given to content as well as syntax. Candidates must continue to follow the language strand selected in the first and second year units.

CLLA 302: Advanced Classical Texts

In this unit, students in each strand (Greek or Latin) will read two major texts in order to achieve understanding of them both at a linguistic level and for their literary/historical significance. The texts set may vary from year to year. In any year the texts set will normally be the same as those for CLLA 202, but candidates in CLLA 302 will be required to read larger portions, and will be examined at a qualitatively higher level.

CLLA 303: Classical Prose Texts

In this unit, offered in alternate years with CLLA 304, students in each strand (Greek or Latin) will read two major prose texts in order to achieve understanding of them both at an advanced linguistic level and for their literary/historical significance. The texts set may vary from year to year. Second-year candidates are strongly recommended to complete CLLA 202 prior to enrolling in this unit.

CLLA 351, 352, 353, 354: Special Options

Students interested in special options should consult the Head of School for advice and further information about the following units: [in all Special Options, the permission of the supervisor and the Head of School is essential prior to enrolment]

CLLA 351: Classical Languages: Special Option A (Sem 1 or 2)
CLLA 352: Classical Languages: Special Option B (Sem 1 or 2)
CLLA 353: Classical Languages: Special Option C (Sem 1 or 2)
CLLA 354: Classical Languages: Special Option D (Sem 1 or 2)

Special Options can be used by students enrolled:

  1. in either the Advanced or Graduate Diplomas in Local, Family and Applied History who are completing their award and who, due to the changes in the availability of their Group II units, cannot enrol in the unit of their choice. If you fall into this category you are advised first to contact A-Professor Janis Wilton (ph: 02 6773 2107).
  2. to pursue a specialised course of study in a particular area. This can only be done by first consulting the appropriate member of staff. This may be part of an existing unit, or a unit taught at a different level or a reading unit devised in consultation with the supervising member of staff.
  3. to pursue specific units viz.
