Australian Colonial Frontiers

This is a virtual archive of sources on Australian frontier and rural history

Dr. David Andrew Roberts

Australian Colonial Frontiers is an electronic archive of materials relating to 19th century Australian rural and frontier history. Comprising a number of instalments, this extensive database presents critical, scholarly versions of archival materials on a variety of subjects and themes which are of particular interest to researchers in the University's School of Classics, History and Religion. It is intended also to facilitate the growing activity of the Faculty's premier cross-disciplinary research centre, the Heritage Futures Research Centre, with its commitment to exploring the contribution of heritage to Australian regional identity, profile and purposes.

Hosted by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, this resource reflects the growing importance and utility of the WWW as a research and teaching tool for historians, students and the general public, and accords with the principles of UNE’s strategic plan that stresses our commitment to the open communication of research findings. This emphasis on promoting and transmitting knowledge and resources to the wider Australian and international community also befits UNE’s record in distance education and its commitment to Information Technology services.

To date the Australian Colonial Frontiers database consists of one instalment, The Castle Forbes Affair, comprising transcriptions of documents relating to the 1833 convict uprising at Singleton in the Hunter Valley of NSW. A second instalment, The Bathurst Convicts, is imminent.
