This site near the south-west corner of the Troad is excavated by Coşkun Özgünel as part of the Smintheus excavations. Situated 200 m north of the Smintheon temple, it had been subject to illegal digging in 1982.

2008

Excavation of the Chalcolithic remains under the sacred road of the Roman period sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus continued this season in squares A5 and A6, at a depth of 1.2 to 1.7 m. An additional wall of the storage building excavated in 2007 was revealed. This 5 x 5 m square building has walls preserved to 0.60 m on stone foundations. In front of the south wall is an area of hardened earth and traces of an oven or hearth. Immediately north of this hearth is a stone base for a wooden column to support the roof. Finds associated with this building include pottery vessels with horned handles, miniature vessels and four-footed bowls, as well as bone needles, a stone axe, and ground and chipped stone.

2004

On top of the site was evidence of Roman occupation. This included a 2nd century AD wall, a 6th century water channel and many pits and child graves. Below were Early Bronze Age and Chalcolithic deposits. The prehistoric material consisted of postholes, indicating wooden architecture. The pottery was of Troadic types and showed connections with the Balkans and eastern Aegean.

Troad Bölgesi’nin (Babakale Yarımadası’nın) güneybatı köşesinde yer alan bu yerleşimdeki kazı çalışmaları 2004 yılında Coşkun Özgünel başkanlığında Smintheus kazılarından bir ekip tarafından yürütülmüştür. Smintheon Tapınağı’nın 200 m kuzeyinde yer alan bu alanda 1982’de kaçak kazılar yapıldığı anlaşılmaktadır.

Yerleşimin üzerinde Roma Dönemine ait kalıntılar bulunmaktadır. Bunların arasında M.S. 2. yüzyıla tarihlenen bir duvar, 6. yüzyıla tarihlenen bir su kanalı ve çok sayıda çukur ile çocuk mezarı sayılabilir. Bunların altında İlk Tunç Çağı ve Kalkolitik Dönem kalıntıları yer almaktadır. Prehistorik malzeme arasında, ahşap yapıların varlığına işaret eden dikme oyukları sayılabilir. Troad’a özgü tipteki keramikler Balkanlar ve Doğu Ege ile ilişkilere işaret etmektedir.
