History of Wright Village

Once called the ‘Claude Street Flats’, and at another time ‘The Flats’, Wright Village began its existence in 1975 as 32 Flats, in blocks of 4 Flats, with either 6 or 8 bedrooms. 4 bedroom flats were built in 1985. Upon the closure of Wright College in 1989, to honour the contribution that the Wright Family made to the University of New England it was decided to rename the Claude Street Flats, Wright Village.

Logo

A competition was held amongst the Residents in 2005 to design a new logo for the Village. Bobby Zhang submitted the winning entry. A translation of his design is as follows: the single figure at the top left of the shield represents living & learning independently; at top right the volleyball & net are symbolic of team involvement, UNE sporting facilities and those Residents who love to play sport; academic achievement is depicted through the mortarboard & scroll, while the world globe represents our cultural diversity.
