The Guide is a manual of sheep and cattle production anonymously written in the early 1880s for Silver and Co. of London by Rolf Boldrewood, who was soon to write the Australian classic, Robbery Under Arms. Not only does the Guide provide an authoritative record of all aspects of buying, developing and running a sheep and cattle station in the mid to late 1800s but also the challenges and rewards of doing so. It combines Boldrewood's close knowledge of the land and animals with his understanding of the law and of people, thus creating a valuable and inspiring portrait of our history as a nation based on the pastoral industries.
At the time, the then anonymously authored book drew glowing reviews for its usefulness to migrants intending to become squatters; from the information packed in by the author one can not only gain fascinating insights into pioneering life and attitudes but, as one recent reviewer noted, "it would be perfectly possible ... to build a slab hut or manage a bullock team from the instructions given here."
The Australian Grazier's Guide by Rolf Boldrewood has been sympathetically edited by Associate Professor John S. Ryan and republished jointly by the Centre for Australian Language and Literature Studies and the Department of Animal Science at the University of New England.
