Honours Program
The NEBS Honours year combines a concentrated study of approaches to analysis of organisational research data, concentrated study in a specific topic area related to the dissertation, and the Honours research dissertation itself. The Honours year can be undertaken as BBus (Hons) or BFA (Hons) [Rules are in Chapters 9 and 13, respectively, in the 2006 UNE Handbook]. The dissertation will weighted as two-thirds when computing the grade for Honours.
Admission:
As detailed in clause 9.2 of the BBus (Hons) rules or clause 13.1 of the BFA (Hons) rules: (a) completion of relevant Bachelor’s degree requirements (b) completed units to value of at least 24 cp at 300-level, and (c) passed units to value of at least 36 cp at 200-level or above at Credit level or better plus NEBS 305 (formerly MM205/305) undertaken during BBus (or former BCom) study and passed at the level of Distinction.
Honours Year:
The Honours year run within a single academic year for full-time internal students and within two full academic years for part-time external students. Mid-year enrolments will not be permitted. The Honours year comprises 48 credit points (cp) of combined coursework and dissertation research. Enrolment in the single 48 cp version of Honours unit will no longer be permitted. These units, NEBSHONS and NEBS 400 will be formally deleted by the Faculty next year.
Program for Full-time Internal Students
1st semester: NEBS 406 ( 6 cp) Making Sense of Organisational Data [This is a new unit that provides students with the skills and training necessary to conduct analyses on both quantitative and qualitative data. Students will learn to analyse quantitative data using SPSS and to analyse qualitative data by hand, using mapping techniques and using NVivo.] NEBS 499 (18 cp) Research Project Planning & Management [this new unit is essentially a one-on-one experiential unit; each student will be supervised by the staff member who will also supervise the dissertation component in NEBS 407 for the student, in a specified topic area related to the dissertation topic and will have three assessable outcomes: a 10,000 word critical literature review, production of a written honours thesis proposal (8,000 words, including project management framework, development of conceptual framework for the research, completion of all aspects of ethics approval application, where appropriate) and presentation (compulsory and assessed) of that proposal to the School. Unit will focus on materials contained in the Honours Project Management Handbook.]
2nd semester: NEBS 407 Honours Dissertation (24 cp); maximum of 25,000 word dissertation, to be submitted by mid-November in year of candidature).
Program for Part-time External Students 1st year:
1st semester: NEBS 406 (6 cp) Making Sense of Organisational Data 2nd semester: NEBS 499 (18 cp) Research Project Planning & Management 2nd year: NEBS 407 Honours Dissertation (24 cp; maximum of 25,000 word dissertation, to be submitted by mid-November in 2nd year of candidature).
Examination: The Honours dissertation submitted for NEBS 407 will be examined by two examiners, nominated by the Honours Year Coordinator in consultation with the supervisor. At least one examiner must external to UNE. Examiners will be given four weeks to conduct their examination and submit their report. The final grade for NEBS 407 will be determined by averaging the percentage marks each examiner submits as their assessment of the dissertation.
Honours Grade: The final grade of Honours will be determined as: (.167 * NEBS 406 %) + (.167 * NEBS 499 %) + (.667 * NEBS 407 dissertation %) Honours Class I will be awarded for a final grade of 85% or higher. Honours Class II Division 1 will be awarded for a final grade between 75% & 84.99%. Honours Class II Division 2 will be awarded for a final grade between 65% & 74.99%. Honours Class III will be awarded for a final grade between 50% & 64.99%.
