What is in the Course?
All students undertake compulsory units of study in three subject ‘streams’ each year. These streams are Musicology/Ethnomusicology, Performance, and Composition/Musicianship.
Tasks and activities within each are modularized to include such things as orchestration, music history and aesthetics, world music, computers and music, aural skills, keyboard harmony, primary and secondary instrument study, ensemble performance, and conducting. In addition, over the period of study, students choose four elective units from outside the area of music. An individual project unit prepares students for the Honours program if they wish.
Career Opportunities
The Bachelor of Music at UNE is designed to provide students with a breadth of knowledge that may be used in a variety of careers. You learn orchestration, composition and conducting. You listen to and develop knowledge in a large repertoire from the classical tradition as well as a variety of non-western traditions. You practice your own musical skills in an environment that encourages experimentation and individual talent as well as ensemble participation. In short, you will be equipped to move into a variety of careers. Students who wish to become school music teachers may proceed on to a one-year Graduate Diploma of Education.
