Who should study this course?

Marine Science and Management is a broad area encompassing a number of disciplines each of which are covered in this degree. For example, students can study topics as diverse as: basic ecology of marine and estuarine systems; the geological processes that have produced, and maintain coastal features and habitats; the taxonomy and systematics of marine organisms; the production of food from the sea (aquaculture and mariculture); the effects of human activity on marine habitats and organisms; and measures which can be used to conserve and manage Australia’s rich biodiversity and marine resources.

Not only does the course include important theoretical components, but students also have the opportunity to develop practical skills which will give them the edge when it comes to looking for employment. These skills include: scientific diving; small boat licence (and coxswains certificate for more experienced boat handlers); marine radio operators certificate; and marine first aid.

Career opportunities

The balance between science and management content within the degree provides a wide range of employment opportunities in environmental fields. Examples include environmental officers in government (local, State and Federal) agencies and conservation organisations, planners, researchers and managers in marine parks, as well as various roles in fisheries research and policy development, and in commercial fisheries ventures (including aquaculture). Positions are also available in the private sector as environmental consultants.

Flexibility is built into the course structure of the Bachelor of Marine Science & Management allowing students to choose topics and build on their specific interests. Students can tailor their degree to equip themselves for a career in specific areas of marine science and/or for further study and research.
