Why study the Bachelor of Livestock Science at UNE?

Armidale is one of the top locations in the world for studying livestock science. UNE is in the heart of premium grazing country and there is ready access to all the resources needed for teaching and research in livestock science. UNE has an international reputation for livestock research. Local CSIRO Livestock Industries and NSW DPI staff are also available as adjunct lecturers and research supervisors in areas such as economics, genetics, biochemistry, nutrition, metrology and animal health.

Armidale is the centre for the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), Lambplan and Sheep Genetics Australia and headquarters of the Beef, Sheep and Poultry Cooperative Research Centres, the Agricultural Business Research Institute and a number of beef breed society groups, such as Angus, Poll Hereford and Murray Grey.

The course has two majors - animal health and nutrition and sheep and wool. UNE has the national coordinating role for sheep and wool education. Students enrolled at Sydney, Melbourne, Charles Sturt, Tasmania, Queensland, Western Australia, Curtin and Murdoch Universities have the opportunity of cross enrolling in UNE units by distance education. Only students enrolled at UNE can study all the units developed in the Sheep CRC covering all aspects of the wool and sheepmeat supply chains from farm to fabric and from paddock to plate. As with all UNE courses there are small class sizes, flexible entry and study modes.

Who should do it?

Those currently employed in the livestock industries (sheep and wool, cattle, goats, pigs and dairy) or those who wish to enter the livestock industries. The course provides an understanding of the complex interactions between soils, plants, domestic animals, humans and their economic interactions. The development of practical abilities lead to an appreciation of the importance of pastures in relation to livestock management, the options available to improve grazing livestock profitability and how the quality of livestock products (especially meat and wool) can be manipulated to improve economic sustainability.

Career opportunities

Graduates from this degree can expect employment in advisory, regulatory and research positions in all agricultural fields in both the private and public sectors, particularly in breeding, management and consultancy for the livestock industries and agribusiness. Potential careers range from extensive rangeland production to high input grazing and feedlotting.

Normal admission requirements apply. Assumed knowledge is Mathematics and recommended study is Chemistry.

For students without the recommended background knowledge, the Faculty offers a Foundation unit in Chemistry and Mathematics.
