Doctor of Philosophy
The Ph.D. is a research degree, with a maximum period of study for full-time students of four years, and for part-time students, of six years. To be eligible for entry, a candidate must show potential for research and must have fulfilled all the requirements for at least one of the following, at the standard of an Australian university:
- A Master's degree containing a substantial research component.
- A Bachelor's degree with either First Class Honours, or Second Class Honours, First Division.
- Other qualifications showing a standard of study and of research proficiency or potential at least equivalent to a superior level of completion of an Honours-level course of four years duration.
In special circumstances applicants who do not hold any of the above qualifications may be admitted to candidature if they produce evidence of acceptable research experience.
Research may be undertaken away from the University under some circumstances, with arrangements being made for on-site supervision. However, all candidates are expected have at least 84 days of direct contact with supervisors over the period of candidature. The School also requires the candidate to present a research proposal and at least one seminar on their research findings during their candidature.
Master of Arts, Master of Science
These are honours degrees, normally completed by research only. Entry requirements stipulate an honours bachelor's degree of at least second-class standing, the Master of Letters or the Graduate Diploma in Psychology at at least credit level, or equivalent. There is a preliminary course which may be taken by qualified candidates who lack the above qualifications.
Period of candidature is from one to four years, with direct contact with the supervisor a condition of candidature. For the M.A. this is a minimum of ten days per year, and for the M.Sc. attendance on campus is required at such times as the Faculty determines. The School also requires all Masters candidates to present a research proposal and a seminar on their research findings during their candidature.
