Options to improve your Psychology GPA for entry into 4th year

If the psychology units in your academic record do not satisfy the minimum criteria for entry into our 4th year Psychology programs, some options for further study are described below.

  • If your accredited major is more than ten years old AND MEETS the requirement of a Credit average

In this case, you are advised to update your qualifications by re-sitting the third year of your major.  You can do this at UNE by completing four units in Psychology in the Graduate Certificate in Arts

You are also advised to include our core 3rd year units in this course.  These are PSYC366 (Biopsychology), PSYC301 (Psychological Testing), and PSYC302 (Advanced Research Methods and Statistics).  See the Courses and Units Catalogue for further information on what units are available and in which semester they occur.

A suitable plan is:

Trimester 1

Trimester 2

PSYC366 (Biopsychology)

PSYC301 (Psychological Testing)

Elective @ 300 level

PSYC302 (Advanced Research Methods and Statistics)

The elective in Trimester 1 could be PSYC202 (Research Methods and Statistics) if your statistics and research methods skills need upgrading, or another 3rd year unit (see link CAUR  link above for options).

Our evaluation of your academic record will include these four units as part of the two required methods and statistics units or as part of the six most recently completed units.

  • If your accredited major in psychology is more than ten years old AND DOES NOT MEET the requirement of a Credit average

In this case, you are advised to upgrade your qualifications by completing a new accredited major in psychology in the Graduate Diploma in Psychology (previously the Graduate Diploma in Social Science was used for this purpose).  The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (GDP) provides a vehicle for entry into our fourth year programs.  The GDP is also suitable for students who have completed a degree in another discipline and wish to move into psychology.

  • If your grades in psychology units do not meet the criteria or are not sufficiently competitive

At UNE, you are able to re-enrol in a previously completed unit to improve your grade, but only as a non-award unit.  This entails higher fees but could be an option if a student only needed to repeat their statistics unit/s for example.

See this link for information on non-award unit costs:

and here for the application process:

However if you need to complete more than one or two units we suggest the Graduate Certificate in Arts option.

  • If your degree was completed at an overseas university

You need to contact The Australian Psychology Society to have your qualifications assessed in relation to Australian standards.  There is a fee for this service.

Contact our Academic Coordinator Libby Fitzgerald (02 6773 3189) for more information on these options.
