The Fourth Year Program in Psychology
Applications for Fourth year 2013 will open in early September and close 31st October 2012
NOTE: Information about 4th year Psychology in 2013
has now been updated.
We offer two fourth year programs in Psychology. These are
(i) the Honours program
(ii) the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology
Both provide an APS accredited fourth year in psychology. The Honours program qualifies students for further postgraduate study (for example, PhD or Masters in Clinical Psychology), whereas the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology provides only limited access to further postgraduate study. The programs differ in how the research component is conducted. There are limited places in both programs. See the "Information for Prospective Fourth Year Students 2012" below for details.
Honours can be entered as a stand-alone program which students can apply for after completing a degree with an accredited psychology sequence at the required standard (see next section). The stand-alone degree can be a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), Bachelor of Social Science (Hons), or Bachelor of Science (Hons). Or, Honours can be studied as part of our integrated four-year degree, the Bachelor of Psychology (Hons). The Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) is entered at the undergraduate level. The Honours degree contains a 50% independent research project.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology is also a stand-alone degree that follows the same topics, activities, and requirements as the Honours program, except in how the research component of the degree is conducted. PGDP students follow a supervised group research project which is worth 37.5%. Further coursework is substituted for the lower research requirement.
Both fourth year programs can be completed either full-time or part-time as an on-campus or off-campus student. The attendance requirements are the same in both modes. Full-time off-campus study, however, requires special permission from the fourth year coordinator. Both programs are subject to HECS liability and UNE fees. Graduates from both programs are eligible to seek supervision to become a registered psychologist. Enquiries about supervision and registration should be directed to the Psychology Board of Australia.
