The Bachelor of Audiometry
The Bachelor of Audiometry– Australia’s first undergraduate degree in Audiometry
The Bachelor of Audiometry at the University of New England offers you the opportunity to obtain a distinctive qualification in an occupational area that has worldwide application. The BAudiometry is unique in that it represents the bringing together of the practical education and training in Audiometric Assessment available through TAFE (Western Sydney Institute) with the conceptual and theoretical understanding through study of Psychology and Linguistics at the University of New England.
Why study the Bachelor of Audiometry?
If you have completed the Certificate IV in Audiometric Assessment and are currently enrolled in the new Diploma in Audiometry at TAFE (HLT51307 Diploma of Hearing Device Prescriptions and Evaluations), or have completed the new Diploma, you are eligible to start the Bachelor of Audiometry program at UNE. This will lead to a named undergraduate degree in Audiometry. The combination of practical vocational training and strongly relevant conceptual knowledge makes you highly competitive in the employment market and in the application pool for entry to postgraduate study in Clinical Audiology.
The primary focus of the UNE program that forms part of the core of the BAudiometry is Psychology, with a secondary focus in Linguistics. The value of Psychology is in providing you, first, with a survey of the bases of human behaviour, including an introduction to sensory processes, perception, cognitive abilities, social processes, personality, emotion and abnormal function. Thereafter, you will learn the principles and applications of psychological assessment, statistics and methods, human lifespan development, and perceptual functioning both normal and impaired. In the study of Linguistics you learn about the basis of human communication and how languages are structured and used. These core aspects of the degree, together with the practical training achieved through TAFE, provide you with a robust set of skills and abilities for your further career and training aspirations.
Full details of the UNE components of the degree can be found in the Course and Unit Catalogue.
UNE is renowned for the quality of its teaching, receiving a maximum five star rating from the good universities guide in 7 out of the past 8 years, a record not matched by any other university in Australia. UNE has also been recognised for its outstanding teaching performance by other agencies, such as the Australian Learning and Teaching Citations, receiving the maximum of 10 citations in the last two consecutive years.
UNE is also the oldest provider of distance education in Australia. All the UNE components of the BAudiometry are available by distance education, with some having mandatory 3-day intensive schools on the UNE campus.
