About us

Sally Rooke

The convenience of being able to study psychology by distance education was what initially drew me to UNE.   But the experiences I had as a student were what kept me here through my undergraduate degree, and through the PhD that I am close to finishing.  Throughout my time here, I have received an enormous amount of encouragement and support from the psychology academics (who probably believed in me more than I believed in myself!).   Their efforts to make learning material memorable and inspiring, and to make students feel valued, have made studying a very enjoyable experience.  As a postgraduate student, I have been provided with outstanding training in research, several teaching opportunities, and the opportunity to travel overseas for psychology conferences.  I feel very lucky.

Psychology dictionary definition

The Graduate Careers Council of Australia (GCCA) describes psychology in the following way:

"Psychology concerns the study of human behaviour, as well as the factors that may influence human behaviour. Professional psychologists use scientifically-established processes to help investigate a range of personal and social issues."

Psychology at the University of New England was established in 1938, making it the third oldest Department of Psychology in Australia, and we rank among the best in Australia with a strong tradition in both teaching and research. We are credited with being the first department of psychology to offer distance education in psychology. We have an extensive range of teaching, library, computing, and research facilities and a well respected Clinical Psychology program. We are accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council as an academic organisational unit for the teaching of psychology at undergraduate, 4th year, and postgraduate level. This means that UNE degrees containing the approved sequence of units and have been accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. We have about 20 academic staff, several general staff (i.e., administrative and technical) and several research associates. A history of the first forty years of the Department of Psychology was written by the third Professor of Psychology (Barratt, 1993).

Two elements contribute to educational quality in Psychology at UNE: the teaching staff are highly qualified and class sizes are comparatively small. High quality staff are attracted to UNE because of its reputation and the cosmopolitan yet uncrowded lifestyle offered by Armidale. On-campus students find the environment congenial with a wide range of accommodation available and excellent cultural activities and sporting facilities. Off-campus students enjoy the ability to maintain their family and work commitments while studying for a professionally accredited degree.
