MAAL and MAAL (Hons) Application and Enrolment
Application Procedure
There are three intakes in each calendar year. The UNE academic year begins in February and ends in February. Domestic students apply directly to UNE and International students apply directly to UNE through International Marketing and Pathways.
The closing date for applications to begin study in Trimester 1 2013 (February) is 3 February 2013. It is best to apply well in advance of this date. The closing dates for applications to begin study in Trimester 2 (June) and Trimester 3 (October) 2013 is TBA.
Closing dates for domestic students applying directly to UNE may vary. Please check here for the latest closing dates.
Late applications for International students may be considered, however prospective students need to take into consideration visa processing times for their country when applying.

Below is an explanation of some of UNE's terminology:
Application – means to apply for a place in the Master of Applied Linguistics. If your application is approved (i.e. you have the necessary pre-requisites, and there are places available) you will receive an offer of a place in the degree. If you did not supply the necessary documentation at the time of application, the offer will be conditional upon the sighting of the relevant documents.
Enrolment – means that your details are formally entered onto UNE's student system, and you are allocated a student number. You specify which units you want to take in each trimester, and your name is added to the class list for each of these units. The process of enrolment generates other steps such as the issuing of a fee invoice, an email account and library access code.
A 'unit' is the smallest component of academic study at UNE. Some Australian universities call this a 'subject', while North American students may know it as a 'course'. MAAL units carry 6 credit points each, and require approximately 150 hours of work each.
The Master of Applied Linguistics is a 'course', a 'degree' or an 'award'. It is composed of 48 credit points, so you need 8 units of 6 credit points each to complete the award.
The Master of Applied Linguistics degree also affers a 'badged major': The Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL).
A 'core' unit is a compulsory unit. A 'prescribed' unit is compulsory for a particular major within a degree. An 'elective' unit is, naturally, one you may choose as part of your program.
A 'major' is a specified combination of units within a discipline or area of study.
A 'program' can mean the same as 'award' and it can also mean the sequence of units you have chosen within the MAAL: ie your individual program.
