Master of Applied Linguistics with Honours

The MAAL (Hons) is a 72 credit point degree, consisting of 48 credit points (8 units) of coursework and a 24 credit point dissertation.

For the 48 credit points of coursework, students have the option of taking the standard route stipulated for the MAAL, or opting for the MAAL(TESOL) major.

The dissertation (LING600 Dissertation) provides research training through preparation, under the guidance of a supervisor, of a substantial dissertation on a topic of special interest in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics.

Students who obtain a good grade (at least Second Class Honours First Division) in MAAL (Hons) are well equipped to pursue a higher research degree, such as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Linguistics or allied fields.

Entry requirements

In order to enrol for LING600, students must have obtained a Distinction average for higher on their MAAL or MAAL(TESOL) coursework.

Students also need to submit a project proposal with their application. Acceptance to the degree will depend on availability of an appropriate supervisor for the research project as well as on the quality of the proposal. We suggest students make sure the project they submit matches the expertise of one of the Linguistics academic staff (see Research page).

The dissertation

At the end of their period of candidature, the candidate shall submit a dissertation reporting on an original investigation. This dissertation is subject to examination by experts in the area. For more details, see here.

Period of candidature

The degree can be completed in 1.5 years of full-time study or up to 5 years of part-time study. However, due to the time demands of carrying out a research project, we strongly encourage students to opt to enrol for LING600 as a year-long part-time unit.
